Job Description

Trócaire is one of Ireland’s top INGOs, having almost 50 years of experience in international development. Trócaire works in partnership with local organisations, supporting communities in over 20 developing countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

We are a social justice organisation working in partnership with local development and humanitarian actors, to support people and communities to tackle the root causes of poverty, injustice and violence and to use their own power to create positive and lasting change.

The Director of International role provides leadership, direction and oversight of Trócaire’s international work, which includes all country operations across development and humanitarian disciplines, ensuring alignment to organisational strategy. The role is responsible for the delivery, funding, impact and effectiveness of the Trócaire programme overseas, and for accountability to key stakeholders.

The role involves responsibility for a number of disciplines and for managing teams of professionals in those disciplines as well as managing significant and strategic relationships at many levels within and outside the organisation.

Reporting to the CEO, this is a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional individual to lead implementation and oversight of Trócaire’s new strategy across development and humanitarian programmes in c. 20 countries. The role will be offered on a contract of indefinite duration.

The role is responsible for both the strategic and operational management of a large and complex portfolio, with country teams and units across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and HQ in Maynooth, Ireland. This role is responsible for the overall cohesion and effectiveness of the Trócaire programme of work overseas and for its alignment to the new Trócaire Strategic Plan.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the role will share collective responsibility with other ELT members for delivering Trócaire’s strategy and vision.

The role will require an individual who is a highly motivating and strategic leader with experience of developing and implementing programmes globally.

Key Duties amp; Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic vision and direction for programme country work, so that organisational objectives are achieved.
  • Create and maintain a shared vision across the staff of Trócaire’s International Division to ensure that country and organisational objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and review of organisational strategy as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), ensuring an integrated approach to working both within areas in the International Division and across all Divisions in the organisation.
  • Lead on key strategic initiatives for Trócaire in the new strategy, notably localisation and partnership.
  • Monitor the external environment in which Trócaire operates to ensure that significant developments are clearly understood and that opportunities and possible innovative responses are identified and leveraged in ways that enable delivery of the organisation’s mission.
  • Through inspiring and accountable leadership, create a working environment which is positive and inclusive, and continuously look for ways to improve this. Contribute in particular to two strategic cultural shifts in the organisation: (1) increasing the empowerment and accountability of all managers and staff, and (2) increasing equality, diversity and inclusion across the organisation, especially in country operations.

Country Operations and Human Resource Management

· Provide effective leadership and strategic direction to countries, through line management of and support to the Heads of Regions / Heads of Portfolios, ensuring that Country Strategies and Divisional Operational plans are developed, implemented and reviewed in line with organisational strategy, policy and procedures.
